How To Manually Follow Focus
In a time before your camera did everything bar press the shutter button,
lenses were manually focussed. This meant an actual human being had to look
through a little viewfinder and focus on the subject without the help of any
digital trickery.
Having a sports photography background that stretches back to when manual Follow focus was the only focus, I had to have the skills needed to nail the focus of a footballer running at me with the ball and the opposing player next to him trying to get the ball back. Framing the shot, hitting the shutter at the perfect time and focussing too is a lot to think about all at once so the focus actions became instinctive.
SK-F2X Professional Follow Focus
Sevenoak SK-F2X Follow Focus Pro is a professional but convenient-to-use follow focus built out of anodized aluminum construction. It is designed to attach to a standard 15mm support system with a quick release clamp which allows you to simply release one knob with simple twist and hinge the follow focus unit aside to access the lens without any obstruction while changing lenses.
SK-F2X also features a height adjustable and exchangeable drive gear, so you can also adjust the height of the gear according to the height of the lens/camera, and you can also have the wheel spin whichever direction you prefer for pulling focus. The entire setup can be mounted either to the left or right of a lens depending on your needs/preference.
Sevenoak SK-F2X follow focus also built with two adjustable hard stops to limit the focus draw between two desired points which can be placed independently; this is particularly convenient when using lenses that do not have hard stops on the focus ring.
Not every shot was sharp but there was always enough to keep the client happy. Today it’s still the job of a sports photographer to deliver sharp images to their clients but auto-focus, although not infallible, now ensures most images are sharp even when the subject is running, jumping or driving past the photographer.
